EXTERNAL PROJECTS

Projects and Repairs

A project is rarely too small or too grand for me — I just love to see the finished product knowing my clients are happy. This is reflected by my passion and success in making a positive difference in my clients lives. Check out some of my recent successes and get some inspiration for your next project.

PERGOLA & ARCHWAY

This job took place following a terrible storm during which the previous pergola had collapsed giving the neighbours clear view of the clients living room. The goal was to build a Pergola and archway much stronger and to included a trellis along the back to make the garden and living area a bit more secluded. With careful planning, preparation, and execution, you can see the unique and wonderful finished product.

PERGOLA PROJECT

This was the first time I had a client helping with a construction project as he purchased a bespoke Pergola which was custom built in Germany. It was a great project and an interesting build with the biggest challenge being the precise measurements and a few adjustments due to machine cuts being slightly out. Also getting the three meter glass up was no easy feat. It was great working with a customer and personally I think this structure adds so much more style to this property.

INSULATING AND PANELING A SHED

This client wants to use their shed for more than just tools and be more functional. As with every shed there is always some movement, so when doing a task like this you should have a layer of water proof membrane, then insultation before applying your boarding, and ensure you wear a face covering when cutting fiber insulation as you don`t want to inhale fibers into your lungs. Its always rewarding as it makes the shed feel much more homely and warm if using through winter times.

PATIO

One of the projects I'm most proud of as it was a huge success was replacing rotten decking with a beautiful slate stone Patio as well as re-constructing the timber Pergola to finish the job off nicely.

RENDERING

This wall was built from stone which did not match the rest of the exterior of the property that had been rendered. This part of the wall had to be built up to the line of the rest of the home and finished off with matching render.

CHILDREN’S MUSIC BOARD

This was built for a children's nursey school to have as a music resource outside for them to explore and create sounds using basic items found in the kitchen and home. The clients have told me the children love it!

CHILDRENS PLAY EQUIPMENT

This was a great project and although the instructions where not clear in some areas due to some parts not matching i was able to put it together securely and it was  great to see the children playing and enjoying it right after it was finished.

COMBINATION LOCK INSTALLATION

The goal was to secure the side gate with a contemporary style double sided combination lock. With careful measurements the lock was secured to the gate to provide extra security with keyless access.

PORCH REPAIRS & GLOSSING

This was a job where I hadn't fully understood the extent of the damage until I started the paint job. As you can see the porch beams had rotted away back to the screws, so it had to be rebuilt using external wood filler in layers and sculpturing to match the original framework. Once finished it was great to see the end result.

CONCRETE PATH

The entrance to this property didn't work as it was mostly dirt with a few pebbles on top and some circular flagstones. So a new concrete path was built and we even embedded the original flagstones into the concrete to make a bit of a design feature as requested.

DECKING REPAIRS

A job that took a bit of time as the main end timber beam had rotted away  meaning all the decking at the end had to be uplifted to be able to replace that beam before starting to replace several pieces of the rotten decking. Its now created a safe and nice place to sit in the garden once again. The client will be re painting the decking to finish it off. A much cheaper solution then replacing al the decking in one go.

FENCING PROJECT

This was 102ft of fencing which needed replacing after many years of repairs from the client. They now wanted something that was going to last. We discussed the options and settled on using concrete posts & kickboards with quality timber panels as the extra costs means much longer life in the years to come.

GARDEN GATE & FENCING

This task was all about improving the access to the garden, as the old double gates couldn't be opened very easily and the client wanted a normal gate to be able to get their bins in and out. I removed the double gates and built a feather board rail fence using what materials the client had lying around to keep costs down and then built a gate only using new timbers for the frame, post and rails. What a difference it made.

CREOSOTING FENCING

This fence had not been treated in the last 7 years, looked tired and was on its way out. After a single coat of creosote it has been brought back to life! Looks good as new.

ROOF FLASHING

I was very happy with the outcome, as you can see the old flashing had a lot of wear and tare and had begun to peal away and leak in places. It was all stripped back including the bitumen & Mineral and replaced giving the customer that important peace of mind that there won`t be any more issues with rain water coming through.

PORCH PROJECT

This porch was almost falling down where it had rotted through almost everywhere. The customer wanted to keep the costs down so we agreed on a simple build to have it as an open frame for the time being and may look to included windows down the line. Check out the end result for yourself!

SHED ROOF REPAIRS

The job was no easy feat. The roof was falling in on itself  and you were unable to even see the floor. The goal was to secure the structural integrity while also adding a contemporary style and prevent water from coming through the large holes in the ceiling. With careful planning, preparation, and execution, you can see the unique and wonderful finished product.

SHED PROJECT (II)

The goal was to build a shed that would last for many many years as many flat packed sheds use thin timbers for the frame which can move over time causing the shed to become unstable and rot quicker. I placed large timber struts and made a concrete base, cladded and boarded internally. With all this careful planning, preparation and execution, you can see the unique and wonderful finished product.

SHED PROJECT (I)

There are many challenges to building a new shed. This project re-used old materials from a torn down shed where some was damaged with rot and woodworm etc which could have  meant we would run short. However on this occasion to reduce the overall cost for purchasing more cedar cladding we decided to use a spare window that had been laying around  and it turned out very well allowing natural light into the completed shed as a bonus.

SHED ROOF REPAIR

This Wendy house had a bit of a rough time and lost the felt on the roof in the storms. Although the timber underneath had suffered some water damage it was only minor and so I replaced the felt and used bitumen to seal all the joints which creates a longer lasting roof.

GARDEN LANDSCAPING & RENOVATION

This garden hadn’t been maintained for several years with a mixture of black bin bags, rubble and some felt membrane placed down, then over time weeds had settled. The garden has now been given a new lease of life after being completely re-dugout, weeds & stones removed, two new flower beds built and has a new lovely turf lawn.

FLOWER BED RENOVATION

These were two overgrown flower beds in this garden which had a large amount of rubble mixed in with the dirt and weeds. The client wanted them to look nice and tidy again but also to be low maintenance. So the rubble and weeds were removed, hardcore sand put down as a base, then topped off with artificial grass. A much better look and easy to keep tidy.

CORNER BED WITH ARTIFICIAL GRASS

This was a great job which I enjoyed putting together. The corner of the garden had a couple of trees a mountain of soil and rubble. Using this to our advance along with some railway sleepers we put it all together to make a new corner bed and finished the feature off with some artificial grass and white pebble shingles around the tree bases. Much better than a pile of rubble.

DRIVEWAY WEED REMOVAL

As with any garden or driveway if not maintained weeds will build up and take over, all these weeds have now been removed for the client creating a much cleaner driveway.

PLANTING LAURELS

Re planting trees and shrubs can present unforeseen challenges, such as hard rocky ground, trees roots, unexpected items, so this project took some time. However after removing a holly tree and conifer as they were leaning over I planted ten Laurels just in front of the fence which in a few months will look amazing as they are fast growing and will provide a much nicer outlook and denser boundary which is what the client required and was extremely happy with. Just goes to show hard work pays off in the end!

PLANTING A LAUREL HEDGE

A huge success as I planted 40 laurels to create a secluded instant hedge in a matter of a few days rather than many months. The biggest challenge was that there had been a number of Oak trees here previously which meant removing lots of roots, digging out multiple trenches. There is a big advantage to making these trenches as it become easier to dig and remove roots rather than lots of holes for each plant. The other benefit is your plant placement will provide more room to play to get the position right in the end.
